Container Gardening Ideas

When it comes to container gardening ideas, I go back a long way. Maybe not as far back as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (the most famous container garden) but far enough in my greenhouse business to pass along a few hints.

Bigger is Better

No matter how you slice and dice it, a small flower basket looks ... small. So you can grow a small speciality plant such as a sedum or agave in a smaller container and it will look good in a collection but if you’re going to “wow!” factor, then you’re going to have to go big.

Bigger is better and my regular size garden container is a 14-inch pot. I only use anything smaller for accents.

My preferred hanging basket is an 18-inch wire basket because I can grow a ton of designs in there.

More is Better

The second of my container gardening ideas is to use more plants rather than fewer.

You want to fill up that large container rather than let it grow to size. You can always prune non-performers out but it’s hard to replant into holes if something disappoints or doesn’t thrive.

So yes, it’s a bit more expensive to overplant than underplant but if you’re looking for great container gardening views, this is how to do it.

Here’s a Video on Design

This design video for how I design container gardens doesn’t use real plants - it is a white board description because I thought I could make it clearer that way.

Some folks want me to do it “for real” but in my mind, the idea of “how” you do it, “how” you design the container is the important thing.

There are two designs systems discussed on the video and either will give you a good looking container

Plant Selection

I get a ton of questions asking if plant X or plant Y can be grown in a basket or container.

So the third of my container gardening ideas is to tell you that you can grow any plant you like in a container.

Anything!

All you have to do is give it the conditions it likes - enough soil, the right amount of sunshine, adequate water and plant food - and you can have any plant.
