decomposed granite

(JAugusta, GA)

I've heard references on garden Shows to decomposed gravel, especially for making walk ways... packs well. I can't find it here and no one seems to know what it is. Perhaps there's another name? Isn't practical to order it in from distant location.
Thanks,
Don

Doug says there's not another name but it is only available where granite is a main quarry stone. You're right - shipping charges would kill you on this weight.

It is indeed "decomposed" granite - broken down bits of granite rock that can be screened out to different sizes.

Makes a good driveway but because of the sharp edges isn't something you want to walk on barefoot. It does pack well.

You might be better off with stone dust - a very fine stone/dust that packs down very hard. Can be used for walkways easily and if you decide to lay down pavers over top of it someday, works for an underlay as well.

But yeah, in GA - unless you can find a quarry on granite - you aren't going to find this product.

Limestone chips
by: Joe

How about limestone chips for patios, pathways? Known locally as 1-b limestone and widely available in western Pennsylvania, the chips are generally fingernail-size.

Decomposed Granite--Pathway Fines
by: JanC

Try looking for a product called "pathway fines" at your local landscape materials supply yard. Basically pathway fines are made from various types of finely ground rock. Some have soil stablilizer added to help with holding the fines in place once they have been compacted. Search on the internet for how to properly lay thhe pathway fines to get the best and most lasting installation.

Don't like decomposed granite
by: Boops

We haven't been happy with decomposed granite on walkway steps that have a slight slope. The top gets loose and if slippery.
