Mulch - Do I remove to put new mulch down?

Hi Doug:
Got a question, if I am putting new mulch on my garden beds, do I need to remove the old mulch first?

Doug says he just adds the new directly over top of the old. No sense wasting good mulch. :-)
Remember that as mulch decomposes, the benefits of this go directly to soil health and plant health. So the more the merrier in that sense and we celebrate the decomposition into elements the plants can use.
But yeah, leave the old on - and toss on the new. Simply make sure you're not burying stems and do leave a space around each plant so mice etc can't get under there and feed on tender shoots in the spring and over the winter.
