Two thrifty ideas

1. Free manure = free fertilizer. Find a livestock farmer or horse stables and offer to clean out their stalls if you get to keep the manure. If possible, look for Llama breeders. Llama's back up to the same spot to poop creating a convenient mound of llama beans (they poop pellets) making it very easy to scoop into containers or the back of a pickup.

2. Befriend a gardener with an established perennial garden. Some perennials need to be divided every 3 - 5 years and most gardeners can't stand to throw away extra plants so are always on the look out for an appreciative fellow gardener.

Doug says - thanks Jan - never knew that about Llama poop. Man, the things you learn on the Web. LOL.

Manure answers-hope it helps
by: Anonymous

I believe that cow manure is the best as they have a 4 chambered stomach and chew their cud, therefore the seeds they eat are more borken down, than the horse manure
We have both horses and cows, and I definately see more weeds growing from the horse manure pile than the cow manure.
There are also some weeds that cows do not eat, but I cannot remember what they are, but others have told me that horses tend to eat more invasive weeds?
Also, a 3 year breakdown is ideal for cow manure, but I have given a lot of gardeners some 6 month+ old cow manure, and they have no complaints. I just dug up some 2.5 yr-3 yr manure so we will see how my new garden grows!

goat or sheep poop

I have heard that any animal that has formed poop is OK to use as fertilizer without sterilizing. Their digestion is such that it kills all weed seeds. Cow and horse poop contains a LOT of undesirable seeds that flourish in a flowerbed. Is this true or an old wives tale?

manure as compost
by: Anonymous

I have used cow manure and horse manure as fertilizer and wish I hadn't. The weeds are bigger and there are more of them. No benefit that I can see. Obviously the manure has to be sterilized. How long should cow or horse manure sit before you can safely use it - free of weeds.
