Whiskey barrels for vegetable growing

I really love the look of whiskey barrels and half-whiskey barrels for my garden. Considering the wooden construction, are these suitable for container vegetable gardening? How many holes should I drill into the bottoms, and how big should they be, please?
Doug says that yes indeed a half barrel is large enough for a tomato plant and a few other herbs around the base of it.
I used to drill a half-dozen holes - approx 1/2 inch drillbits to make enough water drainage space. And then follow all the regular container gardening advice re soils, watering, fertility etc.
A bunch of these barrels and you wouldn't need an in-ground garden for annual/vegetable plants. Hmm, I wonder if the Princess would go for that? :-)
